The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has sounded a stern warning that they are real contenders for their biggest title yet when they inflicted a 3-1 whipping on Fruta Conquerors to end the first round of the Stag Elite League unbeaten on Sunday night last at the Buxton Community Centre ground, ECD.
Home team Buxton playing in the feature match were also in a no nonsense mood as they hammered Topp XX 3-0, while Victoria Kings needled Monedderlust; the East Coast teams enjoying a great night.
The Army virtually sealed the game in the first half thanks to a double off the boot of Jeremy Pereira who blasted the nets in the 7th and 11th minute. Despite Fruta Conquerors pulling one back in the 34th minute when Jermaine Junior hammered home, the Soldiers restored their two-goal cushion four minutes to the half time whistle when the dependable Eusi Phillips scored.
The second half failed to produce any goals but the job was already done in the first 45-minutes by the GDF. After the match was blown off there was a scuffle amongst some players which resulted in red cards being issued to Conquerors’ Jermain Junior and Dwayne Lindie as well as the GDF’s Delwin Fraser, all the cards were issued in the 90+3 minute.
Victoria Kings in their first season at this level ended on a high with a 1-0 win over West Berbice’ Monedderlust, the goal was scored by Seon Robinson one minute to the half way mark.
Buxton United, playing on home turf for the first time in the Stag Elite League made sure that the memories would remain sweet by thumping Linden’s Topp XX 3-0 on account of goals from Dillon Wright in the 15th minute, Denver Dennis in the 37th and Nixon Robertson in the 80th minute.
The teams will now benefit from a long break and will resume rivalry in February (5th, 8th, 12th) of 2017 when they collide in a League Leaders Tournament ahead of the second half of the SEL which will kick off on February 19th at the GDF ground with Topp XX facing Fruta Conquerors and the GDF matching skills with Victoria Kings in the main attraction.
