-postpones competition to January
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) has “regrettably” informed its members that it is unable to commence its annual ‘League of Champions’ Tournament to close out the year owed to them being unable to procure a venue.
“GABA initially was able to secure the use of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for a start date of November 16, 2016. However, the National Sports Commission (NSC) indicated that the backboard was in a shattered state at the time the tournament was slated to commence,” the Georgetown sub-association said in a press release.
The GABA said that subsequently it contacted the NCS to determine how soon the backboard was expected to be replaced. “Consideration was also given by GABA to explore the use of the National Gymnasium as an alternative through the NSC, but this effort has proven futile to date,” the release continued.
The then proposed fixture would have seen the completion of the League on the December 16. The tournament would have allowed for both the seniors and under-23 categories to participate in the competition simultaneously.
“In the circumstances, consideration is also given to taking the tournament outdoors to Burnham Court. However, given the current unpredictable weather pattern and the additional expenditure in the areas of lights etc., GABA has decided to postpone the tournament to the second week of January 2017,” the missive added.
The sub-association said that it will use this period to seek sponsorship and notify Clubs of the number of registered players under the aegis of the association. Plaisance Guardians Coach, Andrew Hercules is GABA President.
