condemning the fourth round Day/Night Digicel Regional First-Class match between leaders Guyana Jaguars and Barbados Pride to a draw with both teams in a position to press for a win.
Set 161 to win in over two sessions, Barbados recovered from a precarious 11-3 to be 23-3 in their second innings, 138 away from victory with seven wickets in hand when rain stopped play at 17:58 hrs brining a premature end to proceedings.
The Jaguars remain in the lead after taking 10.4 points from this game and moving to 43.8 points while Pride who began the round .2 of a point behind in second spot, moved to 43 points, just .8 of a point less than the Jaguars.
Scores: Jaguars (311 & 137), Pride (288 & 23-3).
For the second time in the game teenager Shemron Hetymer demonstrated that he is a ‘ball beater’ but for second time failed to convert an attacking fifty into his second First-Class hundred.
His pugnacious 83-ball 67 was laced with nine fours and a six and came from 126 minutes but nobody else reached 15 as the Jaguars were bowled out for 137 in only 35.2 overs.
Left-arm spinner Jomal Warrican (4-12) and off-spinner Roston Chase (4-41) entangled the Jaguars in their web.
When play began Hetymer pounced on Roach like a cat upon a mouse and crashed him to the cover boundary before edging between the Keeper and first slip two balls later for a fortuitous four.
Hetymer continued to bat in an ultra aggressive fashion and slammed Roach back over his head for four to gallop into the forties. A dismissive tuck off Roach sped across the lightening fast outfield and the West Indies U-19 Skipper, who turns 20 on Boxing Day, was on fire.
Night Watchman Gudakesh Motie (10) got a bit too ambitious and edged Justin Greaves to Shane Dowrich to end an entertaining 51-run stand with Hetymer with 47 of those runs being scored in just 40 minutes yesterday.
In sultry conditions, on one off the better tracks at Providence in recent times, Hetymer cut Kevin Stoute to point for a single to bring up his third fifty from 62 balls, 93 minutes with eight scorching boundaries and celebrated the land mark with a brutal drive over mid-off when Greaves pitched up.
Vishaul Singh edged Greaves for four while Hetymer late cut Stoute to third man to bring up the 100 for the Jaguars.
Singh edged Chase for Jonathon Carter to hold a brilliant left-handed catch at slip to leave the Jaguars on 110-4 before Hetymer edged Warrican and was taken at slip by Carter.
Warrican struck a body blow to the Jaguars when he induced first innings centurion Shiv Chanderpaul (4) to edge to slip at 115-6 before Chris Barnwell (1) departed in similar manner off Chase without addition to the score.
Guyana Jaguars’ Captain Leon Johnson yesterday at Providence presented an autographed shirt on behalf of his team to ‘Reds’ on his retirement from First-Class Cricket commentary.
And when Anthony Bramble (8) was lbw to Chase at 126-8 the Barbados Pride, the last team to beat the Jaguars in Guyana in 2014, were well positioned to become only the second team to defeat Guyana in their last 21 matches.
The left-handed Raymon Reifer (7) provided Carter with his fifth catch at slip when he edged Warrican, who bowled Keon Joseph for a duck and the wounded Jaguars were all out before the lights were turned on.
The Pride’s run chase began dramatically when Anthony Alleyne (0) was trapped lbw by Joseph off the third ball of the innings at 1-1 and Shai Hope (0) touched a catch to Bramble five runs later off Reifer at the Dinner break at 11-2.
After the break Reifer removed Kraigg Brathwaite (7) for his second single digit score in the game to leave the visitors wobbling on the ropes at 11-3 and pendulum had again swung.
But with Chase and Brooks at the crease and the pacers getting the pink ball to swing prodigiously under lights, rain stopped play at 17:58 hrs and an early Tea was taken at 19:00hrs. However play never restarted and the teams had to settle for a draw.
And veteran commentator and sports administrator Joseph ‘Reds’ Perriera called in a day on his impressive career. The 77-year-old commentated in his last match here is Guyana as he called time. Both teams and the officials present paid tribute to the illustrious sports personality.
