The Christmas spirit was ushered in Friday evening at Rahaman’s Park, East Bank Demerara. Some 200 children received gifts from Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus at the annual Rahaman’s Park, Christmas tree light–up.
The event attracted children from surrounding villages.
The tree at Houston is an attraction for persons traversing the East Bank of Demerara, especially at nights.
The 60-foot tree has been adorned with 5000 multi-coloured bulbs. The switch was flipped by Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin, Friday evening.
Minister Gaskin in brief remarks told persons gathered that they are in a season where their attitude and behaviour change.
“We become kinder and nicer as we take into consideration those who are less fortunate and especially the children,” Minister Gaskin said.
The Minister added that the tree is erected at a good spot, which is ideal for welcoming persons to the Capital city, Georgetown.
Ray Rahaman, the organiser of the event for the past 11 years, said that it started out with just 15 persons and now there are over 1000. The tree was at 12 feet and is now 60 feet.
Rahaman explained that the gifts are compliments of Gafoors Houston Complex and China Trading, while Chico Sweets (Beharry Company) was on hand to share sweets to the children.
Rahaman said that the 60-foot tree is the tallest in the Caribbean.
