St. Angela’s ensured that there will be no repeat for defending champions St. Stephen’s in this year’s 3rd Annual Smalta Girls Pee Wee Football Competition after edging them 1-0 via a penalty strike from Nikosi
Part of the action in the St. Pius versus North Georgetown encounter that the former won to march into the semi-finals.
St. Jules in the 24th minute yesterday, at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
They will now face South Ruimveldt who beat Enterprise 2-0 compliments of goals from Raven Jacobs in the 17th minute and Shania Sealey, who netted in the 26th minute of play. In other quarter-finals results, St. Pius through goals from Donna Lowe in the 5th and Kerry Boyce in the 20th squeezed past North Georgetown 2-1 to set up a semi-final date with West Ruimveldt.
Alicia James 26th minute effort was the lone response for North Georgetown. West Ruimveldt then beat St. Agnes 2-0 with an own goal in the 19th and an Amanda McPherson 29th strike accounting for their tally.
The defending champs produced a determined effort, but were hard done by a costly error that provided the goal which proved to be the winning one for St. Angela’s. It stemmed from a handled ball infringement inside the penalty area that resulted in the referee signaling a spot kick which saw St. Jules deliver a powerful shot that rebounded off the crossbar, landing over the goal line.
They won another penalty shortly after for a similar violation, but this time the kick was not on target, landing outside the right upright. Both teams created a few chances after that, but errant finishing put paid to those chances, before the final whistle sounded much to the elation of the St. Angela’s players and supporters, but tears for the former champions.
