Debutants Camp Street All Stars despite going down to Bent Street in a penalty shootout on Thursday evening is among the quarter-finalists in this year’s Georgetown Zone of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Competition.
Leopold Street O’Kenie Fraser (green bib) battle for possession of the ball against a player from Festival City Warriors.
The other teams making it to the last eight stage are defending champion Sparta Boss, Bent Street, Broad Street Bullies, Leopold Street, North East La Penitence, Back Circle and Queen Street of Tiger Bay.
Among the top teams missing out are Albouystown ‘A’, Festival City Warriors, West Front Road, West Back Road and Stevedore Scheme.
Title holders Sparta Boss, despite not looking as clinical as in previous competitions, is still being installed as favourites and seems to be rounding into to form at the right time, recording two impressive victories against strong opponents in Channel 9 Warriors and Queen Street of Tiger Bay respectively.
They have shown that they can beat you in either regulation or penalty shootouts as evidenced in their last two encounters. Going up against a tough Queen Street unit, Sparta Boss were led to victory through two magnificent goals from Dennis Edwards and King Solomom Austin in the 28th and 30th minutes to silence a animated band of supporters from the Tiger Bay community that came out in their numbers.
Another exciting clash saw Leopold Street send a strong Festival City Warriors side crashing out of the competition after surviving a nerve racking penalty shootout that went into sudden death.
Broad Street Bullies and North East La Penitence also showed fine form after convincing wins against Stevedore Scheme and Up Like 7 respectively and added their names as likely candidates for semi-final berths.
