– Prime suspect allegedly fled Guyana
Investigators from the Guyana Police Force (GPF)’s Major Crimes Unit, along with other ranks, yesterday spent several hours digging up the concrete floor of a Belle West, West Bank Demerara (WBD) shack in search of evidence
that would lead to the discovery of Shawnette Savory.
The 37-year-old woman disappeared on August 28, last after leaving her apartment at 222 Prospect, East Bank Demerara, to pay her electricity bill.
Yesterday, ranks braved the sun and dug up the concrete floor of the one-bedroom shack but found nothing substantial. In the end, they packed back all the household items inside the shack, locked the door, and cordoned off the area.
Kaieteur News was informed that three persons are in police custody, including the mother and brother of the prime suspect and another man, who Savory had been dating for some time.
The prime suspect and Savory’s former partner are related.
The prime suspect’s mother is said to be providing ranks with conflicting information regarding her son’s whereabouts. Reports are that while he has fled the jurisdiction, his wife and son are still in Guyana, but the man’s mother is now claiming that she does not know her grandson and daughter-in-law, even though persons said that they were all living in the same house at one time.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said yesterday that they are pursuing a male and female in connection with the woman’s disappearance. He explained that based on information received, a team from Major Crimes Unit went to the area to look for anything of evidential value, but found nothing.
According to the Crime Chief, the investigation is still ongoing. He indicated that they will contact the authorities in the country in which the suspect has reportedly fled.
There are reports that the prime suspect was the last person who made contact with Savory on her mobile phone.
Yesterday’s visit by the police to the zinc shack was one of several since Savory has disappeared, but it was the first time that the ranks actually decided to dig inside the property in search of significant evidence.
Since the police expressed their interest in questioning the prime suspect, he disappeared from his Belle West home, suggesting that he might have had something to do with the woman’s disappearance.
Kaieteur News received information that the suspect had been hiding out in Berbice, awaiting money from his mother to flee the country.
Investigations are ongoing.
