Junior boxer, Isaiah Moore (46kgs), scored a TKO over Barbadian, Rashawn Holder in the first
round and secured the first gold medal for this country as Guyanese boxers continued their dominance at the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament in Bridgetown, Barbados last Thursday evening.
Not to be outdone, Flyweight (youth), Keevin Allicock, replicated the feat forcing the Referee to stop his bout against Barbadian Stephan Harding also in the first stanza to clinch Guyana’s second gold medal of the tournament.
Middleweight pugilist Desmond Amsterdam has positioned himself for at least a silver medal when he pounded out a lopsided unanimous verdict over Barbadian Islow Fraser to propel him into the finals.
Guyanese boxers have dominated the tournament so far but there are still a few who have not yet fought. These include elite boxers, Super/Heavyweight Jason Barker, Light/Heavyweight, Markember Pierre, Bantamweight Clairmonte Gibson and Akiel Mounter and Flyweight Kevin Allicock.
Two of them, Mounter and Gibson were expected to grace the ring last night. Gibson fought Barbadian Alayl Jones while Mounter faced off with Curlan Robinson of Anguilla. So far, Guyanese pugilists have dominated the championship with Lightweight (youth) boxer, Christopher Moore and Light/Welterweight Colin Lewis registering early victories Wednesday night to stay in the medal hunt.
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, who is on duty in another country, has relayed his congratulations to Moore and Allicock even as he urged the remaining boxers to emulate their feat.
He said that the boxers’ success would compensate for the arduous 100 miles walk that the GBA executive and other boxing stalwarts had undertaken to accrue the necessary funds to facilitate the boxers’ participation at the tournament.
”Results like these are very encouraging and makes the job of soliciting sponsorship a little easier,” he remarked. Along with Guyana, the other participating countries are Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua, Jamaica, Anguilla, Dominica, Guadeloupe, St Maarten, Belize, French Guiana, Cayman Island, US Virgin Islands, Martinique and Grenada.
