Dear Editor,
I am forced to write to you about an unpleasant situation I faced at the US Embassy. On December 7th 2016, I went to the US embassy to uplift my passport. I had a phone call two (2) days ago to pick up Monday to Friday from the hrs 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.
When I arrived there I went to the security and told them I am here to pick up my passport. The security told me to go and stand over there, which I did. I waited there for 20 minutes then I went back to her and asked what seems to be the problem. She didn’t answer me but start to talk to another security guard and grumbling to one another that they had made derogatory remarks about Guyanese who have American passports think they are big ones.
I went to get my phone and made a call to the citizenship service, a female answer and I explained to her about the problem with the security guard. She told me that she is sending someone out to receive me to uplift my passport. I went back, and as I got there a female guard with a badge- ACS- came to me and took my passport and told me to go to window 13. I gave the security my belongings and placed it in a container and waited to go in. Then a male came to the security and told them not to let me in. I got very frustrated and was about to leave to head back to my office when an American female employee came and told me her name was Elizabeth and that she has my passport and she need the old one to cancel it. She told me to step over here and said; “I want you to explain the situation that took placed.” I told her about the issues. She was very nice, friendly, understanding and pleasant.
I am asking the US embassy to address this problem and to protect American citizens whenever they come to conduct business. I had posted this on social media and a lot of my fellow American citizens told me they had similar problems with the security at the embassy. I’m requesting the embassy official to look into this matter in a serious way and to ensure these sorts of behaviour stops.
I’m also preparing another letter to be sent to the Office of The Inspector General in Washington, also my congressman in Palm Beach Florida to let them know what American Citizens are facing in the Guyana Embassy with the security service. I strongly advise the American embassy to change this security service.
