Dear Editor,
When I read the letter in Kaieteur News by the Rev. Gideon about the London football scandal, with mention of “the Christian theology and teachings of Jesus Christ”, I thought ‘how ironic’, and decided to let you have something I sent to the London newspapers I read every day: here it is:
“Hello, the sexual fiasco among footballers brings to mind a situation I was made aware of in the 1950s, when I worked as a typist in the government social services in my country of origin in the Caribbean. It might have some relevance now.
The Salvation Army ran a hostel for youngsters (up to the age of about 14, as I recall) who had nowhere else suitable for their accommodation.
One day a child of about 10 came to his probation officer in distress, complaining to him about practices an elderly S.A. Captain performed on him at nights. As the child complained, the P.O. listened but expressed strong doubts.
The child then named other boys who had experienced the same thing, and could support him. The more he complained, the more the P.O. expressed doubt. The child stopped complaining and probably lived in distress forever. The P.O. later told me the tale, and when I asked why he did not believe the child and try to help, he said he did, but “I wanted to hear more”!
I have always wondered what happened to that poor child. When officials who should be protecting us take this attitude, where do we stand? And that is why now every time I see footballers coming on field holding hands with “little human mascots”, I cringe or walk away. While the players are on field, are the children on their own, I wonder?”
