Dear Editor,
When the APNU/AFC coalition was on the campaign trail soliciting votes they made it clear that they were not a reincarnation of the despotic PNC, which created such hardship and suffering during its time in power, but rather a new political entity with a modern vision of democracy. This message resonated with undecided voters, especially the younger and educated masses, who were in need of a different kind of political leadership after the PPP/C lost its contact with the small man and descended into a mire of corruption and nepotism.
It is therefore extremely worrying and uncomfortable to see this government now embracing key players of the despotic PNC past with such open arms. It started with the President’s reverent ramblings on the former PNC leader, LFS Burnham. Now it has gone even further by offering Hamilton Green such generous offerings that he will now live out his life in ample wealth and comfort. Probably the most influential PNC leader who led us on the path of revival, Desmond Hoyte, is given very rare mention by our President. This is a most worrying observation of our President for it gives us an insight as to who were his role models in those terrifying days.
Is this the new political vision that we were promised? Why is the APNU/AFC so openly embracing the key players so highly reviled by the masses for the roles they played in our tragic past? Have they conveniently forgotten the message they preached of starting a clean and unburdened messy past? What is now playing out is making the APNU/AFC look like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They are nothing like what they painted themselves to be during their campaign time. As one of the undecided voters who decided to give my vote to the present government in the hope of a new political direction, I can’t help but express my extreme dissatisfaction on the direction we seem to be heading. If national elections were to be held today my vote is most certainly one that they would be losing.
Even of greater disappointment has been the acquiescing nature of the coalition partner, AFC, who is now a silent supporter in all things they deemed wrong while in opposition. The decision to give Hamilton Green such a generous pension package as reward for the many sufferings he foisted upon the masses of our country,is the clearest evidence yet that the APNU/AFC is still PNC and they never intended to do away with the terrible past of this country.
Emile Manning
