Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry who has been presiding over the Essequibo High Court for the past several months sentenced a 31-year-old Maria’s Pleasure, Wakenaam labourer to seven years’ imprisonment for chopping a man with a cutlass.
Vijay Sanchara pleaded guilty to the offence of wounding with intent on November 8, last, but was however sentenced in December after a probation report was requested by the sitting judge.
Sanchara was accused of wounding Lilavarnauth Dhannyram on March 7, 2015.
According to reports the incident happened at Maria’s Pleasure, Wakenaam, at a barbecue. Sanchara claimed that Dhannyram fired a chop at his brother and missed. He said that he was defending his brother at the time when he retaliated by launching a chop at Dhannyram, severely injuring him in the process.
