Dear Editor;
I have noticed that this recurring subject of blame for GuySuCo’s state of decay is on the front burner again. The glaring fact that the previous Guyana Government administrators are constantly ducking and dodging, is that when they were in the political opposition pre 1992, they used the sugar union GAWU which was controlled by the PPP to sabotage the sugar industry and the govt. of the day.
Strikes were frivolously called by one gang on a location and the other gangs joined in support. It then took domino effect where the other estates and the clerical union NAACIE would join in strike action. These actions were very frequent. These strikes were definitely followed by arson of the cane fields.
As a former security officer with the corporation, I experienced having to frequently arm myself with the Security Office’s shotgun and along with a party of men head for the location of the fire to try and arrest any arsonist found in the area.
It was a futile exercise because I later learnt that the fires were set long before with two long candles joined together to make a very long candle. Dry cane trash was put at the bottom of the candle and the candle was lit and the arsonist will be long gone when the cane starts burning. They were most likely laughing at our futile efforts to apprehend them.
There were widespread thefts and sabotage of machinery and parts. I apprehended many workers who were taking away the company’s property without authority. These things need to be pointed out to the members of GAWU and the PPP, WHO ARE CHOOSING TO BE OSTRICH-LIKE AND HIDE THEIR HEADS IN THE SAND FROM THESE HISTORICAL TRUTHS.
They were the ones who, during their 1992-2015 period lamented the economic loss GuySuCo and the nation suffered when short strikes were called without arson and sabotage. Can you imagine the losses incurred pre 1992 with those extended days of strikes? The PPP used GAWU to destabilize the govt. during the days of the PNC to gain political ascendancy. They cannot dispute these facts. They owe GuySuCo monetary reparation, BIG TIME!
