Dear Editor,
As we dwell in the penultimate month of our Golden Jubilee year of Independence, I ask that you share these selected pieces composed by the Prophet Kahlil Gibran. Some of these verses we recited at the start of certain functions some years ago. Should we do so once more to provide some illumination on our path to the next step of this period of our journey to Unity, Goodness and Glory, perhaps it can help motivate and give guidance to our young people and those in our Parliament.
“Pity the Nation that is full of beliefs and empty of religion.
Pity the nation that wears a cloth it does not weave and eats a bread it does not harvest.
Pity a Nation that despises a passion in its dream, yet submits in its awakening.
Pity the Nation whose sages are dumb with years and whose strongmen are yet in the cradle.
Pity the Nation divided into fragments, each fragment deeming itself a nation.”

“… composed by the Prophet Kahlil Gibran.”
Say what?
Khalil Gibran never was or claimed to be a “Prophet”. That was the title of a book of collected verses.
Extraordinarily gifted and whom I greatly admire as a poet and writer, he was nevertheless a drunk and a gambler who mistreated, and was feared by his wife and children.
