The situation at the Central Police Station (CPS) is dire. Residents of New Amsterdam want the police high command to look into the situation with the same passion.
The Central Police Station which was in a reasonable state at the time it was torn down under the then PPP administration, was to be rebuilt from scratch. However four years later the station which is the main operating centre for the ‘B’ Division is still unfinished and no one knows when it will be completed.
In the meanwhile the Police are forced to work in unfriendly conditions from a small office which was built to facilitate court staff.
It is mystifying how police officers stationed at the CPS are able to function under such demoralizing and appalling conditions for such a long time, said one policeman. The Criminal Investigation Department is housed next door. That building was destined for the Station Sergeant. It is a shame to subject the ranks to work under such conditions, the spokesman said.
A recent release from the Ministry of National Security which showed a number of stations to be renovated country wide did not mention the CPS. Residents and ranks alike are getting worried.
Unlike the Brickdam situation, prisoners bound for the Central Police Station are forced to be transported to far off locations like Reliance, Sisters and Albion Police Stations to be accommodated.
According to one prominent resident, it is a surprise that no one is making a noise about the unfinished CPS.
The rebuilding which started during the era of former Home Affairs Minister during the PPP era, Clement Rohee, seems to be at a permanent stand still.
Recently the building seems to be taken over by goats and other animals which from time to time found it to be a jolly resting and play place.
