A group of the 11 dismissed workers from the Demerara Timbers Limited (DTL) along with officials of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) staged a picketing exercise outside of the Ministry of the
Presidency, on Friday. The protesters were calling on the Government to intervene in an effort to have their dismissal rescinded.
According to GAWU, it was recalled that 11 workers were handed dismissal letters for taking part in a peaceful picketing exercise outside the company’s Head Office on October 3, 2016 calling on DTL to engage in good faith bargaining.
“This is the first time in history that an entity, private or public, has taken such a decision of such an incredulous nature. The decision by the company must be seen as yet another but telling anti-worker and anti-union act.
“The company’s action also must be seen as tantamount to denying workers their right to participate in peaceful picketing,” GAWU said in its release.
The union said that in seeking an amicable solution, it sought the conciliatory services of the Ministry of Social Protection to address the dispute.
GAWU claimed that attempts by the Ministry, however, have been strongly rebuffed by the company which bluntly refused to attend any meeting summoned by the Ministry to address the matter.
“The company’s response must be seen as nothing other than blatant disrespect for the Ministry and the concerned workers,” the union said.
DTL is a major timber company operating in Mabura, Region Ten.
