Dear Editor,
Just before 2015 elections, the PPP embarked on a major clean up and had put forward $1billion. They said that $500m was for Georgetown and the remainder for other regions. The new government gave City Hall $300m and look at the vast difference.
Where is the report on the PPP spending of the $500m in the city? I would not even go as far to ask about how the other $500m was spent in the other regions and what evidence is there to verify it, but I noticed that the Auditor General completed a recent audit of City Hall over the $300m spent, but there was no word on the larger sum which was previously spent on the capital by the PPP. That really got me thinking. If Georgetown can look the way it does now with $300m, what exactly was done with the $500m the PPP spent? There was little to no physical evidence that $500m was spent in Georgetown.
The PPP had even denied the council’s access to the money claiming they were too corrupt. The then Local Government Minister, Norman Whitaker did not even have the courtesy to hand over financial records to the council so that they who are really responsible for Georgetown would be aware of what was done and where, so they could continue where the government left off. Even though they did not want to give the money to the Council, they could have collaborated with the municipality. Instead the ministry was directly responsible for hiring and paying workers and it was even rumoured that the ministry made out cash payments, allowing for very little evidence of who actually received this money. I would like the Auditor General to release this report so citizens can see what was done with the $500m that went to Georgetown and if he could, the other $500m spent elsewhere.
