Dear Editor,
The recent decision of the Guyana Government, a democratically elected and civilian Government, to hold Cabinet meetings at our country’s Defense Force Head Quarters, Camp Ayanganna , while the Ministry of the Presidency is under renovations or so said the press, is worse than sacrilege and a dark day for democracy in Guyana.
As shocking and most disappointing it is, it will be most interesting to hear the views and opinions of the ABC, Commonwealth and Caricom Countries and the good guys in the office of Region 11 at Young Street.
To the AFC, the coalition partner, I say; what are the thoughts of its leaders on such an undemocratic move? Are the coalition partners of the Government being intimidated as the Ex-Generals exalt themselves? It is hoped that an alternative location be identified soon that is acceptable to all Guyanese in the context of social stability.Guyana is a signatory to a number of International Treaties. Are we as a country just signing unto International Treaties to show off our democratic credentials, but the opposite is being put into practice?
The location chosen by our Government to hold its Cabinet meeting is an enemy to democracy and this early sign of undemocratic practice by the Coalition Government must not find acceptance in our democracy. By the way Mr. Editor, it will be so much of interest to hear the once history making vocal voice of Bryant Hunt, the former Charge De Affairs of the USA Embassy in Georgetown. Where has his voice gone?
