Several persons attending hearings in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday were sent running for cover after a swarm of Africanized bees went wild, viciously attacking anyone in proximity; causing several courtrooms to be kept on lockdown.
The drama unfolded at around 10:15 hrs, and the bees did not spare anyone in their path.
They swooped down on an unidentified man who was traversing outside the court in the vicinity of its Brickdam parking lot. The stings sent the hapless man crumpling to the ground as the swarm surrounded him.
He was left lying there for about 15 minutes before firemen arrived with a fire tender. They sprayed extinguishers to ward of the bees before transporting the injured man to the hospital.
A vagrant who would wander outside the Courts from time to time was not aware that he was in danger as he tried to retrieve a hat left behind by the injured man.
The bees followed the vagrant across the busy intersection at Brickdam and Avenue of the Republic. At one point, he stopped in the middle of the busy road to brush away the insects, not caring of oncoming traffic.
His thoughts of adding another item to his collection was soon aborted after realizing that the bees were hiding in the hat. The vagrant, who was seen waving his hands from side to side, threw the hat onto the road and made good his escape.
The bees were so relentless they forced a policeman off his motorcycle. The officer was seen fanning away the insects and shaking out his shirt. Another policeman, desperately trying to avoid the swarm, sprinted up the road.
Unaware that the Africanized bees were on the loose, a female passerby sought refuge in the compound of St. Stanislaus College after the insects insisted on trailing her.
Reports are that the woman threw herself on the concrete walkway and began shaking out her undergarments before running
Person arriving for hearings, especially matters being heard in Court Two, were forced to use the courts’ main entrance on Avenue of the Republic. While the bees continued their attack, the court orderly announced a recess.
Several attorneys, prosecutors, reporters and police officers took this opportunity to peek through the courtroom’s oversized glass windows to witness the commotion.
It appeared as though the bee attack was entertaining for other people, as they were seen giggling and traversing in and out of the courtroom.
When the Magistrate came back on the bench, persons desirous of leaving the courtroom were instructed to use the dark tunnel-like prisoners’ chute.
It is unclear where the bees emerged from but by noon they were gone and court sessions resumed as normal.
There was speculation that the bees might be living in a tree situated just outside the parking lot. However, this was not confirmed.
