The Integrated Crime Information System (ICIS) should dictate how the Guyana Police Force (GPF) deploys its assets for crime fighting. This position was taken as the Private Sector Commission voiced its concerns over the rapidly growing crime situation.
Major General (Retired), Norman McLean, said the ICIS programme is very interesting, as it allows the GPF to analyse every crime that takes place across the country. McLean added that the information from the programme can even show the trends and crime hot spots.
This, he added, should dictate how the GPF deploys its resources to meet the challenge of crime.
However, McLean noted that how the information is applied in the various police divisions would be a matter for top brass at the GPF.
Captain Gerry Gouveia said that while he believes the police force is deploying anti-crime ranks, these ranks need to be seen.
“If they (GPF) say they are deploying, we are not seeing them. This is not a time for the police force to camouflage themselves. This is a point in time when we want to see them. We want to see them in our neighbourhood; we want to see them on the corridor when people are coming from the international airport.” Gouveia stressed.
Gouveia added that the presence of the police will serve as a deterrent to crime.
“We don’t understand the strategy they are using and the problem is that it seems not to be delivering any results. Every day more and more of the private sector are being hurt and moreover in the country the fear and paranoia qare building every day.” Gouveia said.
The police force needs to restore the public’s confidence in them, Gouveia added.
