Urged on by a large Suriname contingent comprising most of their teams participating in the 2016 IGG three-day competition, Suriname’s girls Basketball team registered their second win in two days against their Guyanese counterparts on Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
On Friday evening the Suriname lasses inflicted a blowout 69-25 win against the host but the Guyanese girls, who had to win Saturday night to keep the series alive, showed some improvement in their second game but were still not good enough to prevent their Dutch neighbours from securing a 53-42 win.
Shiwani Van ijzendorn demonstrated speed and skill and on several occasions dribbled past the Guyanese to pass the ball to Stephanie Hubard, Joleen Nyum or Mirelva Marica as Guyana again exhibited poor ball control as the visitors enjoyed the better possession.
When the Guyanese did get the ball it was quickly stolen by the alert opposition who scored regularly off turnovers and at half time Suriname were leading 24-19.
In the third stanza the visitors extended their lead by 10 points before Makeda Rogers scored from the free throw line to give Guyana its first point in the second half.
By this time the raucous Suriname supporters, who outnumbered local fans, were dancing in the stands and singing ‘Wy zyn Suriname! We winnen, we Kunnen niet meeri verliezen’ which means Suriname! We are winning, we can’t lose again.
Two females in the opposite stand waved the Golden Arrow Head lustily whenever a Guyanese got within shooting range.
Seemingly inspired by the wonderful atmosphere inside the Sports Hall the Guyanese scored five unanswered points to reduce the lead and by the end of the third period the electronic scoreboard read Suriname 36, Guyana 29.
For a brief period in the last quarter both teams ‘upped the tempo’ and played a fast paced game but the late surge from the home team was too little too late and when the final whistle was blown, the Dutch were in celebratory mood.
Suriname again got contributions from almost everyone with Nyum scoring a game high 14 and Cheneler Lougflre (7) Hubard (5), Marcia (5) and Amore De Mis (5) all doing their bit.
In contrast, Jada Mohan (11) and Tandika Bouyea (6) were the only Guyanese to score more than four points. But Guyana, although still looking underprepared, had showed improvement from their 69-25 defeat on Friday evening.
