A cane harvester who fatally stabbed his reputed wife to death on Monday, was yesterday charged with her murder.
Winston Benjamin, aka “Blood”, 43, who was attached to the Skeldon Estate and a resident of Lot 40 Ulverston Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was charged with murdering Yansen Brush, 38, a mother of four and a canteen operator attached to the Alness Primary School.
The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge of murder as he stood in the prisoners’ dock before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
Benjamin, who was unrepresented and seemed somewhat remorseful, with tears in his eyes, exited the courtroom heavily guarded and flanked by relatives of his and his reputed wife.
His eldest daughter who was also present had to be restrained as she could not control her emotions as she saw her father, the man whom she will always remember, as the one who murdered her mother.
As Benjamin walked down the court steps his eldest daughter was seen and heard screaming and crying while shouting, “Why you kill she? Why?” She had to be tugged away by relatives.
According to the facts of the case, Benjamin went into hiding after he knifed his reputed wife to death in a nearby shop a few houses away from her home. He escaped into the Ulverston Backlands with the murder weapon still in his grasp. He later surrendered to authorities in the Kookrit Savannah area Black Bush Polder after being cornered the following day.
Benjamin was remanded and is expected to return to court on the 19th December, 2016 for the commencement of a Preliminary Inquiry.
