Dear Editor,
I just read a headline in Wednesday’s KN that made me laugh but there’s nothing funny about it. I think this country has finally succeeded in sapping the little scraps of sanity that I have left, after over 4 decades of struggling to survive here.”…GPL Suffers Another Shutdown…Urges Customers to Check Website and Facebook”
Am I the only one that thinks that Guyana is slipping back into the dark 80’s? Rampant power outages; we had 4 yesterday and tons over the course of the past few months and it comes with major voltage fluctuations. It makes one wonder whether GPL is not satisfied with crippling our businesses and hampering our children’s studies, they need to damage our electrical equipment in the process.
Let’s go back to the headline though. Just how are we to check the GPL Website and Facebook? Without power there is no WiFi. That leaves us at the mercy of GT&T’s 4G. The government has chosen not to renew Wartsila’s contract…Wow! It seems that we are heading back to the days of GEC and GTC…watch and see. Can GPL really take over Wartsila’s operations and run it as efficiently? Brace for more blackouts I say. Does anyone have any idea what percentage of power generated is lost due to technical and infrastructural faults? It’s in the range of 30%-40%; look it up. That is gross wastage of resources. If you take the time to do the math you will see that in fuel alone, we are losing hundreds of millions of US Dollars every year.
I don’t want to get started on the crime situation, but whatever is the official crime statistics with regard to robberies multiply it by 3 and you will get the real picture. Why? Because people don’t even bother anymore to report robberies; nothing comes of it. I think the trickle of an eventual mass exodus has started, what do you think?
