While the Traffic Chief, Superintendent Dion Moore, is attending an International Conference in Brazil, the Guyana Police Force has appointed Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan to perform the duties of Traffic Officer.
Ramlakhan presently serves as the force’s Public Relations and Press Officer. He will be holding both posts until Moore returns.
In a statement, the police said that Moore along with a representative from the National Road Safety Council will be attending the conference in Gramado. Issues on alcohol, drugs and road safety will be discussed.
The conference comes at a time when Guyana has recorded an increase in road fatalities. As of September, the police’s Traffic Department recorded 100 deaths, 10 less than the same period last year.
In an effort to counter the mounting road accidents and to clampdown on drunk, speeding and reckless drivers, the police launched “Operation Safeway” on September 15, last.
One week after the launch, the Force made 1000 cases against motorists breaking the traffic laws.
