Ramcharran Dandoop told Kaieteur News that he and his wife were in the bottom flat having dinner when they saw smoke emitting from the upper flat. He recounted that upon investigating, he saw one of the rooms engulfed in flames.
“I go upstairs to check and me see de middle room light afire. And me run out wid me wife and start shout fuh dem neighbor come out”.
According to Ramcharran, although the fire tenders were immediately summoned, they arrived approximately half an hour later, much to the dismay of the residents.

“Dey come long after we call… when de house falling down. Everything burn up. We nah get fah save nothing. If they did come fast enough, this place coulda save. And dem ain’t even come with no kinda water”.
Residents in the area had immediately formed a bucket brigade in an attempt to out the blaze, but they were unsuccessful.
The fire is suspected to be of electrical nature as the middle room housed the main switch.
An estimated $5 million went up into flames.
