Dear Editor,
A few nights ago, whilst sitting in a public space with my family, having a little relaxation I saw a group of men approaching. Looking closely I realised it was a man surrounded by a retinue of bodyguards. Thinking that it may have been the President or Prime Minister out for some exercise or a stroll, I got up to be polite and to give whichever one it was a gracious salutation.
Unbelievably, I discovered that it was not the President, not the Prime Minister, not a celebrity, not a corporate executive, nor a political office holder but rather just the Town Clerk, Royston King jaunting along with this security detail whilst recreating. This is the man whom the Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan wrote to Georgetown Mayor Patricia Chase-Green reminding her that he is like any other administrative officer, and is hired to carry out the directives of the Council.
Now therefore my question is why does this administrative officer need bodyguards? What and who is he afraid of? The workers of the Council whom he pays late each month? The contractors who have to agree to special financial arrangements in order to get the contract? The vendors that are chased off the streets at his whims and fancies? The Council’s Creditors whom are owed hundreds of millions of dollars? Is it the former Town Clerk whom he had reprehensively removed so that he could get the job that he is afraid of? Why does he need this special protection? Or is it just to pump up a little more his overinflated ego?
Having bodyguards paid for by the municipality is unprecedented, very wasteful for a broke and cash strapped city, and unnecessary. Ministers of the Government don’t get this level of protection, former Presidents don’t get this level of protection. And one can only guess the millions of dollars per year this is costing the ratepayers. Very soon he may have the City Constabulary vehicles with lights flashing and sirens wailing escort him through the city on his journeys.
