Stafarei Hopkinson who is currently on remand for the murder of Linden business woman, Shevon Gordon, was yesterday, committed to stand trial in the High Court for attempted murder by Magistrate Leron Daly, at the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry (PI).
The Magistrate found that there was sufficient evidence for Hopkinson, a/k William Alexander, 33, of Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown to stand trial for allegedly discharging a loaded firearm at taxi driver, Curtis Thom, with intent to murder him on March 23, 2015 at Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt.
According to reports, Thom, a 48-year-old taxi driver of Lot 138 Laing Avenue was shot to the chest and right shoulder by two men, one of whom is believed to be Hopkinson around 1:00hrs, on the day in question. Kaieteur News understands that Thom’s shooters are known to him, and the shooting was an execution attempt.
Hopkinson was captured seven months after Gordon’s murder in the backlands. He and a group of men had allegedly robbed several persons at gunpoint at a Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara supermarket on November 3, 2015.
According to reports, on April 4, 2015 at Lot 125 One Mile Linden, a group of armed men confronted Gordon, who had just disembarked her Canter truck in front of her home. The men demanded that the woman hand over a bag she was carrying.
One of them fired shots in the air and the business woman was shot while struggling to maintain possession of her bag.
Hopkinson is currently before the court on four counts of robbery under-arms.
Based on reports, Hopkinson was among a group of men that stormed the supermarket and held up businesswoman Lakeranie Singh and her employees at gunpoint. They reportedly beat the businesswoman about her body and escaped with cash, jewellery and other valuables. According to reports, the bandits appeared to be well informed about the supermarket, since they escaped with a DVR, which recorded footage from surveillance cameras located at strategic points on the premises. The men reportedly escaped in Singh’s Toyota IST, with the police hot in pursuit.
They fled into a nearby backland, but were subsequently captured after fire was set to the bushes.
