During a scheduled visit, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Thursday met with India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Retired General, Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh.
The minister hosted a lunch at Hyderabad House in Delhi in honour of the Prime Minister.
According to a statement of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Nagamootoo was accompanied by Guyana’s newly accredited High Commissioner to India, Dr. David Pollard, OPM’s Chief of Staff, Omar Bissoon and Mrs. Sita Nagamootoo.
“Prime Minister Nagamootoo described the meeting as both friendly and cordial, and Guyana and India reaffirmed continuing fruitful relations and strong, bilateral ties. The sides briefly reviewed several of India’s technical assistance projects in Guyana, including those in the sugar, rice and ICT sectors.”
A special guest at the lunch was national hero, Ram Sutar, sculptor of the Indian Arrival Monument to be erected at Palmyra, East Berbice.
“Both parties expressed interest in reactivating the Guyana/India Joint Commission, which last met some eight years ago. At a time of growing conflict between India and Pakistan, Prime Minister Nagamootoo urged both countries to continue their search for a peaceful settlement of disputes over Jammu-Kashmir,” the OPM statement said.
Guyana, the Prime Minister assured, is against all acts of aggression and terrorism, and deplores the use of military force or the threat of such force as a means to resolve problems between states.
Prime Minister Nagamootoo arrived on Thursday morning from Tamil Nadu where he had a schedule of meetings and visits since October 2.
While he was Chief Guest at the World Tamils Economic Conference in Chennai, the Prime Minister delivered a Convocation address at the Bharath University and toured the prestigious VIT University.
On Thursday, the Prime Minister also participated in a Panel Discussion on the Enforcement of Environmental Law which was hosted by the Delhi Tamil Advocates Association.
Yesterday, the PM was set to meet with several prominent corporate executives and members of the Rotary Club in Delhi.
A dinner in his honour is being hosted by Vivek Tankha, a member of the RajyaSabha.
