The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has commenced a programme to repair and restore bridges in the City. A number of bridges in the city are in a serious state of disrepair and this has prompted City Hall officials to take action.
The first bridge to be repaired, as a part of the project is the Alexander Street Bridge, located at the corner of Alexander Street and South Road. BK Construction Company has been awarded the contract to repair the bridge at the cost of $3 million.
Several other bridges are slated for similar repairs; these include the bridges along Sussex Street that link Albouystown and Charlestown communities. M&CC noted that bridges are important features of the City’s landscape. They also help with ingress and egress to and from communities.
For more than two months the Barr Street Bridge in Albouystown has been out of order and authorities at City Hall were unable to give a timeframe for the construction of a new bridge. The bridge, which serves as a key alternative for traffic coming from as far as the East Bank of Demerara, is in need of immediate attention after being closed to vehicular traffic.
Councillor Malcolm Ferreira had requested that the City Council provide an update on the works being done there, and City Engineer Colvern Venture responded that the tender document is being finalised after which it will be sent to the Town Clerk’s office.
