Town Clerk at the Linden Municipality, Jonellor Bowen, on Wednesday refuted allegations of burglary in the Mayor’s office as was reported in sections of the media recently.
According to the Town Clerk it was published in the Guyana Chronicle dated September 28, that the Mayor’s office was burglarized three times in the five months since he took office. Ms. Bowen said doors were found open but nothing was missing.
“It is important that the Mayor, his office, Deputy Mayor and her office are secured at all times. It is the mandate of the administration to ensure that maximum measures are put in place, security measures so that they can be secured. It would have been extremely difficult for us to be going through an alleged breakage not once but thrice. “
Bowen noted that she was not aware that the first allegation was a breakage. She said a door was found open and the second time a door leading to the washroom of the Mayor was also found open. The third time was between September 20 and September 21, another allegation of breakage was reported.
The Town Clerk said that an internal investigation and police report were both done.
Ms. Bowen said that the investigating rank Detective Constable Halley visited the scene when the last report was made and found one window open and some documents scattered on the floor but did not see any sign of actual breakage to the office.
The Town Clerk claimed that the rank photographed and dusted the scene and eight sets of fingerprints were lifted. Some were taken to the fingerprint branch in Georgetown for consideration.
The report of the second alleged breakage was made on July 18. Again Detective Constable Halley was the investigating rank. This time no fingerprints were lifted and there was no sign of any breakage. She noted that several staff members were questioned and no one had any knowledge of who might have entered the Mayor’s office.
She said that from the report it is the view of the investigating rank that it seems to be an internal issue and therefore suggested that investigations should continue pending the results of the security surveillance camera.
“Acting on information Detective Constable Halley spoke to Ms. Jasmine Fraser, the Mayor’s secretary who showed the said rank a black surveillance camera which was in the Mayor’s office and also the property of the Mayor.”
The Town Clerk added that the rank examined the camera and dusted for fingerprints and one print was lifted. The memory card was missing from the camera. The camera is lodged at the Mackenzie Police Station.
“The security Department, my office, we were not aware that a security camera was there, so that is news to us. When it was made known in the police report it was the first time I had known that there is a security camera and the security department was also unaware. Knowing that we would have three allegations in such a short space of time is a bit worrying.
“I am happy that we have the police report and I am looking forward to a report.. maybe the final aspect on what is happening so we can bring closure to this.”
Commander of E Division Snr. Superintendent Calvin Brutus confirmed that of the eight fingerprints lifted, four were discarded and the other four were sent to Georgetown. The division is awaiting the results.
