Dear Editor;
The efforts of the Vice Chairman for Region 2 and the Chairman of the Riverstown/Annandale Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) were not at all helpful in trying to stop the escalating lawlessness that occurs every Sunday morning at the Suddie Market square with no end in sight to this ugly situation. This was evident of 2016-09-25.
Vending takes place there twice weekly with the other day being on Wednesdays when the business activities are much less at the market which falls under the control of the N.D.C. A spaciously fenced compound with a one flat building is being provided to accommodate vendors with much available space in and outside of the building remaining idle. Some built- in stalls still remain unoccupied.
The big problem is that the Administration is totally impotent, incompetent and incapable of regularizing the use of spots by vendors who are allowed to do as they feel without exercising any control over them.
Surprisingly, there are more vendors plying their trade outside of the market area on the road parapet. Blame lies with the Administration. The Administration cannot be exonerated for encouraging and tolerating a dangerous precedent by creating a monster that it cannot now control.
The lawlessness is beyond control with even plucked chicken being sold outside by the main entrance and by the road parapet as well when there is a laid out plan for the selling of meat to take place at the back of the market. This creates encumbrance of the main roadway leading to the market. It is very much evident as a traffic hazard. Too late the cry shall be when serious accidents or fatalities occur. Many a time, it becomes impossible for vehicles to traverse the road because of the spreading out of items for sale.
Even the entrances of permanent business places are being blocked by the vendors with the owners getting no redress from the Administrative officials on their predicament.
The Administration needs to implement a stringent and clear cut policy to exterminate the lawlessness once and for all. It is my personal opinion that it will always remain a liability for anyone to be put in a position without having the ability to function in that capacity. It is quite manifest that the Administration is failing miserably to properly serve the people who elected them when better needs to be done.
