On September 26, last, eight-year-old, Shekinah Benn, of Richmond Village, Essequibo Coast, and
another pupil were braced by a laden truck on their way home. Both pupils sustained serious injuries about their bodies which left them seeking medical attention at the Suddie Public hospital.
However, while little Shekinah Benn remains hospitalised with a broken left leg which her family is claiming is infected, her counterpart who suffered a broken pelvis has been discharged from the hospital.
Benn’s mother, Mignon Benn, said that her only daughter’s (Shekinah Benn) left leg is cracked to the bone. Ever since, the child has been hospitalised as a patient at the Suddie Public Hospital, no proper care has been extended to her daughter despite the severity of the child’s injuries.
Ms. Benn stated that doctors attempted to sew back the skin to cover the broken bone and her daughter remains in severe pain. Benn is however arguing that due to her daughter’s injuries, senior medical staff at the hospital should have already arranged to have her daughter transferred to the Georgetown public hospital to undergo an emergency surgery.
Benn said the doctor who is attending to her daughter told her that they cannot discharge the child and the surgery would be performed on Wednesday. Benn stated that she can’t afford to take self- discharge for her daughter and it was whilst awaiting surgery, she leant that her daughter’s injured foot is deteriorating, since the child has picked up an infection in the leg.
Benn said she was informed by doctors that they were not equipped with the necessary apparatus to implant in the child’s leg and have asked her family to purchase them.
The driver of the truck was placed on station bail. It was his first day driving a truck when he caused the accident in Henrietta Housing Scheme. Benn is a pupil of the C.V.Nunes Primary School.
