Commissioner of Police (acting), David Ramnarine, disclosed that of the 102 Kgs of cocaine seized between July and September of this year, 90 Kgs was confiscated from outgoing passengers at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
Three cases account for the amount of cocaine seized at the airport.
Ramnarine made this disclosure during a press conference that was held at the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown on Friday last.
The Top Cop also stated that the Force’s narcotics branch has been “doing well so far” and this substantiates the “fact” that the branch is still relevant.
He also said that over the last three months, a total of 43 Kgs of cannabis worth a street-value of $22M, was seized which accounts for 108 persons, comprising of 96 males and 12 females, being charged.
The 102 KGs of cocaine which has a street-value of $92M that was seized resulted in 28 persons— 23 males and five females— also being charged.
In terms of eradication efforts, Ramnarine said that some 21,150 Kgs of cannabis was burnt in the Linden, Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice) area alone.
These plants, he said, ranged from one to six feet in height.
Ramnarine also stated that on Thursday last, some 4000 Kgs of cannabis plants were found and the three persons that were on the farm at the time were arrested.
