A fish vendor accused of wounding his wife, walked out of court a free man after his spouse refused to give evidence against him. He was however, released on $100,000 bail after he denied escaping from police custody at the Ruimveldt Police Station.
Jonathan Mohamed, 25, a father of two, of Yarrow Dam, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, escaped from the said station, while he was in custody pending a charge of unlawful wounding on September 27.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne told the court that the defendant was arrested on the day in question and taken to the station. Payne said that while in custody, Mohamed requested to use the washroom. According to the prosecutor, a police rank removed the defendant’s handcuffs and while escorting him to the washroom area, he ran away. Payne stated that the defendant was arrested the following day at Yarrow Dam.
The prosecutor objected to bail citing the seriousness of the charge and the penalty attached to the offence.
However, these objections were overruled by Magistrate Fabayo Azore, who granted the defendant bail and ordered him to return to court on October 14.
