The United States descends into political incredulity

Here is an extract from my September 15, 2015 column; “But try as hard as you can to see America as superbly great, the US worries every Human Being on Planet Earth with its horrible negative sides. How can a country so rich, powerful, educated, diverse, amazing in its science and technology, medical research, engineering, inventions, intellectual qualities, its arts and literature produce a Donald Trump? “It is not that what comes out of the mouth, mind and head of Trump is the lunatic rhetoric of a small town governor whose presence the US population doesn’t know about or care about. This man is running for the president of the US and is the lead candidate according to opinion polls, for one of the two major parties.”
I wrote that column a year ago. I honestly thought that this gentleman would have fallen off the radar of the US and the world. We all know what happened since I wrote that piece. And what we know is frightening. Are most people aware that the third in line of power after the President and Vice-President is the Speaker of the House of Representatives? The current Speaker, Paul Ryan has endorsed Trump to be the President. If you think that is horrible then read on. 41 Senators, 177 House of Representatives legislators and 27 State Governors are in support of Trump’s candidacy.
Contrary to popular opinion, the US President does not have unlimited power. The Senate is a formidable fortress of power. The Senate it can be said runs a parallel government through its Committees. The Chairman of the Armed Forces Committee is a person with extensive influence. When it comes to the federal budget, the Speaker of the House of Representatives is a strategic figure.
The point is that the US’s role in the configuration of world power makes these senators makers and shapers of global processes, just as the US President.
It is simply incredible that such people could endorse Donald Trump to be the President of America. Let’s replay the tape just in case you miss the philosophy in the lyrics of the song. We are not referring to obscure politicians from some obscure banana republic but men and women whose role in the United States makes them people with global reach and international authority.
You simply cannot believe such men and women from a great country that the US is, could want a personality like Donald Trump to be the head of the US Government. Something eerie is happening to the US.
One of my all time favourite quotes from the movies is from my favourite James Bond film, From Russia With Love. A SPECTRE agent posed as a British intelligence officer and managed to get the better of Bond. He points the gun to Bond and tells Bond about his plan. He will murder Bond’s female companion, then shoot Bond and slip a note between the two bodies to make it look like Bond killed his girl friend then committed suicide.
Bond turned to him and said; “Tell me, which lunatic asylum they got you out from?”
Each time, I see Trump speaking, each time I see Trump defending an accusation, each time I see Trump hitting back at a critic, I remember that James Bond scene. Which sanatorium did Trump come from? This man has no counterpart anywhere in the entire world. He says after A is C. You film him saying after A is C. You confront him with the video. The rational mind would say sorry or offer an explanation like you got tripped up or were distracted. But to see yourself on film saying after A is C and to deny it is pretty weird.
After the first presidential debate with Mrs. Clinton, he said that a CBS poll showed he won. CBS replied to say it did not do such a poll. Trump is becoming more irrational. Why would you tell your country that one of the most powerful networks did a poll and put you in front and no such thing happened? Is Trump so silly that he did not know CBS would have responded?
Could this man win the election? My answer is yes. If this gentleman could gain the nomination of the Republican Party, not just any party or a new third party, but the Republican Party, then his victory is possible. If this man could garner the endorsement of so many powerful politicians then his victory is possible. What has the US come to? Is the worse yet to come? I hope not!
