Dear Editor;
Once again KN in their 28/9/2016 edition “Coalition no Longer enjoys full confidence of its supporters” gave Dr. Hinds plenty of ink to say nothing. Or as is his customary thing, to criticise, criticise, and level more criticism.
Hinds as usual with his off the cuff statements has come up with a doozy this time. He claims that “by its actions the Coalition administration has lost the full confidence of its supporters.” How does he know this? He wrote; by talking with many supporters of the government, who are unhappy with its stewardship, the unhappiness of some of the people, may be surprising, but he insists that it’s real.
These disgruntled people the goodly intellectual is talking about, obviously vented their feelings at a Town Hall meeting he carried on in Buxton. This of course was graced by the dwindling members of the WPA family. Having nothing more to say on the subject he digressed, to emancipation; “The quest for freedom promised (by whom?) at emancipation in 1838.” Unfortunately emancipation is not synonymous with freedom in that context.
Emancipation means that people are released from bondage, and legal and social or political restrictions. Freedom on the other hand is the absence of coercion, or constraints legal and otherwise. Surely he must know that the emancipated people were under constant coercion and constraints which dispel the belief that they were indeed free. However, freedom was entertained in 1966 at Independence. Where the Guyanese people were free to do whatever they wanted, without coercion or constraints, and to exercise ones rights and powers.
That was however snatched away from us in the 1980s, when we were returned to the plantation. The goodly intellectual acknowledges that the coalition has done some positive things. However, according to him they cannot toot their horn, because of three reasons. What are the reasons? He did not say. Another off the cuff remark?
Since Mr Hinds is both a Guyanese and an intellectual, he could probably, instead of criticising all the time, give of his expertise on for instance “social cohesion.” What he would do to get about that? He can also put forward ideas to help move this banana republic (according to his compatriot) forward. That I think would be a hell of lot better than just criticising.
