Police Inspector, Suraj Singh, a detective attached to the Major Crimes Investigations Unit, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, was called to testify yesterday, when the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of Babita Sarjou continued.
Sarjou’s ex-spouse, Sharnandand Naraine, called ‘Anand’ of Lot 51 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, and Darel Ponton called ‘Yankee’ of Lot 54 Broad Street, Charlestown are currently on remand for the woman’s murder.
Inspector Singh was called as a witness in the Voir Dire (trial within a trial) which is being heard by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The Voir Dire is being done to ascertain whether statements allegedly made by Pronton were willingly or involuntarily given. It will also determine if the statements can be admitted as evidence in the PI.
When the police witness completed his testimony, he was cross-examined by Nigel Hughes, Attorney for Pronton. Peter Hugh, Naraine’s Attorney, was not present for the hearing.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers declined to re-examine Inspector Singh.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum and his team of detectives were able to crack the case on May 22, last, after they spent over five hours digging up a site at Naraine’s Lot 51Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, home where they believed Sarjou’s body was buried.
After digging the site, detectives recovered skeletal remains they suspect are those of the woman. However to confirm, police have since sent DNA samples overseas for testing,
According to reports, Sarjou had left her home to go to the Diwali motorcade on the eve of November 4, 2010 with Naraine who had called her. He reportedly picked her up in his car and while she was sitting in the front passenger seat she was strangled by Pronton who was reportedly seated at the back of the car. Sarjou’s lifeless body was allegedly transported to Naraine’s house. Reports had indicated that Naraine had dug Sarjou’s grave two days before she was killed.
