Residents who are living in Lima Sands, a remote community on the Essequibo Coast, will soon be able to access potable water for the first time. Currently, members of the Guyana Water Authority are installing pipelines in the area.
While this venture will reduce the burden on residents, who were forced to access water from canals in the area to carry out basic household chores and rely on rainfall to access drinking water, they are not sure how soon potable water would become accessible to their community.
One resident said that the installation of pipelines in the Lima Sands area is ongoing. The resident said she does not know how soon water would be made available since the persons who are installing the pipe lines still have quite a large area to complete.
The resident said that the community is however able to access water for necessary household chores from a pond she had dug in her yard. Water for drinking is accessed from a black tank which collects water whenever it rains.
The resident lamented that the pond has since dried up with water flowing into a number of ponds which is owned by a businessman who was given lands to operate fishing activities.
Another resident said that with the installation of those pipelines, a huge burden would be lifted from the residents of Lima Sands.
For a number of years, residents of Lima Sands depended on water from the canals to bathe, wash and to drink.
