Guyanese riders competing at this year’s edition of the Tobago International Cycle Classic at Shirvan Road in the Twin Island Republic, turned in exciting performances when action pedaled off on Tuesday last.
Competing in Division 2 Elite Male, 21 year-old Berbician Jeban Crawford, representing PSL/RBC Cycling Club of Trinidad and Tobago sprinted to victory in the 5-laps 60km race competing at this event for the first time. Crawford won in 1h 25’ 34.822.
In the Division one contest which was dominated by the Dutch, Guyanese Professional cyclist Geron Williams (2 hrs 27 min 17.79 sec) placed 9th overall in the 10-lap 120km contest which attracted 44 starters, 32 completing the distance.
The Dutch duo of Aron Van De Zwet (2 hrs 25 min 50.68 sec) and Nick Stopler stole the honours. Van Der Zwet completed the ten lap/120km circuit well ahead of his PSL team-mate Stopler (2:26.07.57) and Team Foundation’s Ishmael Sanchez (2:26.09.50) of Dominican Republic and another PSL rider Patrik Moren (2:26.50.25) of Sweden.
The top trio went ahead with three laps remaining with Stopler just in front of Van Der Zwet and Sanchez in the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation and UCI sanctioned event.
In the Division 1 Under-25 -5 laps contest, Raynauth Jeffrey (Team Coco’s) finished 2nd in 2 hrs 27 min 16.66 sec; this category was won by Columbian Sebastian Caicedo 2 hrs 27 min 16.39 sec.
Hamza Eastman (Team Coco’s) was 7th in 2 hrs 31 min 47.13 sec just ahead of countryman and teammate Stephano Husbands (2h 31’ 47”30). Jamal John was 13th (2h 31’ 52.21); a total of 26 riders contested this category.
In Division 2 Juniors U-19 -5laps; Andrew Hicks (Rigtech Sonics CC) topped the field and fellow Guyanese Romello Crawford (PSL, RBC Cycling Club) who had to settle for the runner-up spot in 1 hr 25min 35.898 sec.
Riders from Colombia, Germany, Netherlands, Dominican Republic, Sweden, Venezuela, France, Antigua, Cuba Martinique, Canada, Argentina, Jamaica, USA, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Barbados, Denmark are competing.
The Second leg was carded for yesterday in Courland, Turtle Beach. The Division One riders battled over four laps/100km on the Turtle Beach/Les Coteaux, Arnos Vale Circuit, while the Division Two cyclists rode two laps/50km.
Leg 3 is the Plymouth Village Criterium starting on Shelbourne Street in Plymouth tomorrow with the 50 laps/65km race for Division One riders and the 20 laps/26km for Division Two. The Division Three and Novice riders will compete over five laps/7km.
The fourth and final leg is the Market Square Criterium in Wilson Road Scarborough on Saturday, October 1 where the riders all battle over 60 laps /60 km (Division One)/ 20 laps/20 km (Division Two) and Five laps/5km) Division Three & Novices. Overall winners will be crowned.
