A Calendar Street, Albouystown resident was yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of Orrett West, 28, who was killed while hanging out at a popular Plaisance, East Coast Demerara liming spot on June 3.
Kevin Garraway, 19, was arraigned before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where he was not required to plead to the capital offence.
Police Prosecutor David Goodridge stated that on the day in question, the accused and the girlfriend of the deceased had a misunderstanding. The woman walked up to Garraway and inquired from him if he wanted a problem.
A confrontation ensued and West of Tucville, Terrace, Georgetown walked up to Garraway and pushed him away. A scuffle later ensued and Garraway, who was armed with a knife stabbed West about the body, causing him to fall to the ground. West was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Acting on information, detectives in Police ‘A’ Division arrested Garraway last Thursday at a house in Albouystown. He later gave detectives a caution statement confessing to the murder.
A post mortem examination performed on West revealed that he died of shock and haemorrhage due to stab wounds to his neck
Police in a statement said that West, a father of one, was in the company of his girlfriend, when an argument ensued between him and a man, who he had an ongoing dispute with. During the argument, the assailant pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed West in his left side chest and escaped.
This matter was adjourned until October 27, for reports.
