Scotia Bbank, a strong supporter of various community initiatives with contributions ranging from sports causes and HIV/AIDS, to education and arts & culture with a focus geared towards children, non-profit organisations, and the aged, will today sponsor another exciting tournament at the Lusignan Golf Course. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive as part of their prize packages, cash donations of $150,000, $100,000 and $75,000 towards a children’s charity of their choice under Scotia Bank’s Bright Future Programme. Golfers will indicate before the start of the tournament which children’s charity they would identify to benefit from Scotia Bank’s donation should they be one of the top three winners.
Scotiabank – Canada’s most international bank and a leading financial services provider in over 55 countries – operating in Guyana since 1968, operates five branches 2 in Georgetown and one each in Bartica, New Amsterdam and Parika, and offers a complete range of retail and commercial banking services — including online banking and electronic cash management. However, in addition to its banking services, Scotiabank is unique in its community contribution. So far, the Scotiabank sponsored tournament is the only one with a philanthropic component.
Both Robb Street Branch Manager, Brian Hackett and Branch Marketing Manager, Jennifer Cipriani, in making the presentation of a cheque and prizes for the tournament, expressed Scotiabank’s willingness to sponsor golf and also be involved in contributing much to assist in the improvement of life in communities. Ms Cipriani noted that “Under its Global Bright Future philanthropic programme, the Bank channels funds and employee volunteer hours towards initiatives that benefit children in the areas of education, health, social well-being and sports. Scotiabank has contributed on average some $50 million annually to community causes around the world over the last 6 years.”
This year the sponsors have added consideration for the good coverage of media houses by including a Raffle component for representatives of all the media houses who will be on hand to cover the tournament.
Up for grabs by the golfers are prizes for 1st – 3rdBest Net, Best Gross, Nearest to The Pin, Longest Putt, and Most Honest Golfer. Prizes include trophies, clubs, balls, hats, and umbrellas.
Meanwhile, last year’s winner Mahendra Bhagwandin has staked his claim to being in the top 3 again, but the keenness of the competition means that the floor is wide open for upsets or new winners. 2015 Guyana Open female champion, Shanella Webster who brought 2nd at Scotiabank’s tournament last year will again be in contention along with Dr Philbert London who placed 3rd. Close contenders last year – Carlos Adams, Maurice Solomon, and Ian Gouveia – are all expected to participate in this year’s tournament.
1st to 3rd place winners over the last three years were 2014 – Imran Khan, Haresh Tewari and Roy Cummings; 2013 – Andre Cummings, Kishan Bacchus and Haresh Tewari; and 2012 – Jorge Medina, Rawle Moore and Mohanlall Dinanauth
Tee-off time is 12:30 p.m., and the public is invited to view this tournament free of charge.
Some charities that were identified in previous years included St Ann’s Orphanage, Joshua House, Step by Step Foundation, Red Cross, Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre and Cheshire home.
Golf Club President, Oncar Ramroop expressed Lusignan Golf Club’sgratitude for the continued good support of golfing by Scotiabank, and for its philanthropic initiative.
