A 54-year- old pensioner, of Lot 84 Fourth Street Industry, was robbed last Saturday some time around 3:00 hours. The woman is contending that she is not satisfied with the Guyana Police Force (GDF)’s approach to bring to
justice the men who carted off her valuables.
The woman, Ms. Singh (only name given), stated that two men gained entry into her home by removing louver panes from one of the windows. The bandits carted off a silver HP laptop, an Apple Ipad, $800,000 worth in jewellery and $60,000 in cash.
The robbery was committed whilst she and her grandchildren were asleep. The woman said that she is thankful that no harm was done to her or her grandchildren.
She awoke the next morning to find one of the bedrooms ransacked. An alarm was raised and the police were subsequently summoned. Ms. Singh said that the police came and dusted for finger prints.
The police reportedly arrested a suspect; however, that individual was subsequently released. Since then, the woman said she has received no word on the investigation.
The robbery, Ms Singh said has affected the inner workings of the household. She explained that one of her granddaughters goes to the University of Guyana and the other is in high school and the bandits made off with the night lamps from the children’s bed stand which they would use at nights to read before they go to sleep.
She also expressed concerns over the spate of criminal activities in Industry. The pensioner stated that her grandchildren cannot sleep at nights and are in fear of being robbed again. She added that one of her granddaughters is so scared that she goes to bed with a piece of wood. The woman stated that after the robbery, the bandits only left behind $20.
The pensioner is frustrated with all the promises from Minister of Security, Khemraj Ramjattan whom she accused of breaking his promises of safety and security for Industry residents.
She declared that the Minister came and made “big promises” and made residents believe that crime will be under control. The picture he painted of a comfortable living environment, the woman said, is far from the truth.
Ms. Singh said that she’s tired of the entire system as it appears the police are not doing anything. She is calling on the GPF to bring these perpetrators to justice, and on the Government to have a better handle on the crime situation within the state.
