The first Regional Minister of Region One died on Thursday, while walking in the vicinity of the Teleperfomance call centre at Camp and Robb streets.
Fitz Alexander Carmichael, 81, of 205/206 Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Carmichael was walking on the sidewalk around 15:00hrs. Witnesses said that he fell and never regained consciousness.
After his tenure as the Regional Minister for Region One, he then became the Regional Chairman of the said Region. He was also a Head Teacher for a school in the North West district, before starting his political career from 1973 to 1980.
Carmichael played a major role in jump-starting development in Region One.
After spending some time oversea for medical reasons, he returned to Guyana. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of his death.
Passersby contacted Carmichael’s relatives after finding his mobile phone.
