Sep 24, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor;
The subject of this letter, which is the unpleasant approach/behaviour of the Mayor of the Bartica Municipality, during the recent disastrous, unforeseen weather events on 7th August 2016 and 11th September 2016, has been addressed to the Minister of Communities.
The letter follows; Dear Minister, with reference to the above subject, I am pleased to inform you that I am a resident living in Bartica for over 25 years. I bring this unpleasant situation of the unprofessionalism of a person whom we have elected to serve us as our Mayor of Bartica Municipality.
We have experienced the recent disaster of a high wind, coupled with lightening, thunder and the heaviest rain falls in over 25 years in Bartica. The condition of the land where my house is located at 70 West Indian Housing Scheme, Bartica, is testimony that at the time of these unforeseen circumstances, when you expect person(s) in high office(s) to render some degree of comfort following an unpleasant situation, the officials pretended to pledge to render all assistance simply to make us, the Barticians happy.
I have photographs of damages I have suffered during this heavy rain fall which also caused many homes in Bartica to have about 3 feet of water which destroyed furniture and other household items.
We, the residents of West Indian Housing Scheme, Bartica are not engineers, technocrats or persons with the ability to manage major construction, but from our own common sense it could have been observed that the undertakings of the Municipality are without any proper consultation with person(s) of engineering skills and governmental expertise.
Then there is the project of a play field which is not right.
As a matter of fact, we thought that a proper survey would have been conducted by both the regional personnel and members of the local government and out of the discussion a meeting would have been held with the residents to indicate to us the development plan intended.
Neither the Mayor nor the council conducted a visit to our area to inform us of the playfield in progress. The arrogance displayed via a telephone conversation reflected the Mayor’s unprofessionalism in handling matters that required the support from personnel of high office
The Regional chairman did visit me and said that he could only sympathize; also two councilors came and recorded videos of what had-transpired with my property during the weather disaster.
It seems that I could not turn to any government official within Bartica for any help as it appears that these persons are on a different wave length. I am kindly soliciting through your office that a team of professionals visit Bartica to conduct a thorough survey to see if the decision made by the Mayor is correct in relation to the expenditure to construct a playfield that is not needed; but instead poses a threat to our livelihood, the residents of West Indian Housing Scheme, Bartica.
From an evaluation conducted, it was estimated that this project’s cost was $30,000,000. This needs an investigation of government’s spending. This project would affect residents with values to properties worth hundreds of millions.
