Former Mayor Hamilton Green, will continue to enjoy the protection of the City Constabulary at his Durban Backlands residence.
This information was shared with Kaieteur News during an interview with the city’s current Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green. The interview was to ascertain whether the service that is currently not afforded to any other living Mayor, was going to be a burden on the municipality.
“Without any apologies to anyone, we are talking about a former Prime Minister of this country and a former Mayor who would have served the city of Georgetown for in excess of 20 years.”
The Mayor added that she moved the motion for security to be provided at the former Mayor’s residences.
“See nothing wrong with it, the council unanimously agreed. All councillors who were present agree that security services be provided to the former Mayor’s residence.”
In addiction the Mayor said, it is common knowledge that the former Prime Minister/Mayor is out of the jurisdiction; and should he make a request of the Council to have services rendered, as a former Prime Minister he is so entitled.
Mayor Chase-Green was asked if the Presidential Protection Service should be the body, assuming control of the former Prime Minister’s security detail.
“I gave the history of this matter when I moved the motion, in 1994 when he was elected as Mayor of the city of Georgetown. He was then receiving security from the National Guard Service. An agreement was made between the then Commissioner of Police and the then town clerk that instead being afforded the service of the national police and city council, he would just be afforded one or the other.”
Deputy Mayor, Sherod Duncan, also suggested the council come up with a more permanent package to be put in place for Mayors who demit office.
