Left-handed opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul struck an unbeaten 94 to put West Demerara in the driver’s seat against Georgetown when the fifth-round Guyana Cricket Board Jaguars three-day league commenced yesterday.
Chanderpaul batted with authority and together with Akshaya Persaud who is unbeaten on 49, added an unbroken 115 for the third-wicket as West Demerara closed the day on 165-2 in reply to Georgetown first innings total of 170 all out at Lusignan.
Following consistent bowling by off-spinner Richie Looknauth and Romario Shepherd, both sharing seven wickets between them to help bowl out Georgetown, West Demerara began their innings in the second session and lost opener Ronaldo Renee (00) caught off Andre Stoll in the first over. Safraz Esau played a few shots before he was taken off Gajanan Suknanan for 21 with the score on 40.
However, the level-headed Chanderpaul and Persaud frustrated their opponents as they mixed aggression with defence on a decent pitch in favourable sunshine. Chanderpaul slowly got into his stride and pulled Christopher Barnwell for a six before smashing Ronaldo Alimohamed for two more sixes over long-on. Persaud drove Barnwell for four before hoisting left arm spinner Devon Lord for a straight six as they pair continued to bat unruffled.
Chanderpaul then brought up his fifty off 110 balls with one four and three sixes; he continued to bat positively and took a boundary off Barnwell before Smashing Stoll for two sixes, while Persaud drove Barnwell down the ground for consecutive fours. Just before the close, Barnwell found the edge of Persaud’s bat, but the ball dropped just short of Robin Bacchus at first slip. Chanderpaul has so far hit two fours and five sixes and Persaud five fours and one six.
Earlier, Georgetown decided to bat and pacer Shepherd trapped Robin Bacchus lbw off the first ball before Sunil Singh who dumped Mahindra Dhanpaul for a six, was caught at the wicket by Kemol Savory off the said bowler for 16. Barnwell was then taken off Shepherd for two before Andrew Lyght Jr and Jahon Byron shared in a fourth-wicket stand of 47. Lyght was up to the challenge and deposited left arm spinner Keshram Seyhodan for consecutive sixes before smashing Yetesh Dhanpaul for another.
Byron looked solid before he was dismissed off Yetesh Dhanpaul for 17. Lyght continued to play his shots but was caught off off-spinner Richie Looknauth for 47 after facing 59 balls in 112 minutes. Shepherd then bowled Dexter Solomon for 12, while Looknauth sent back Alimohamed and Suknanan for 10 and zero respectively. However, Kellon Carmichael and Devon Lord steadied the innings fairly as they shared in a ninth-wicket stand of 59.
Carmichael timed the ball well as he smashed Shepherd for three consecutive fours and a six before hoisting Looknauth over the cover and long-off boundaries. The Malteenoes all-rounder attempted another big shot but didn’t time the ball as he would have liked and was taken at long-off for 40. Lord was then removed by Seyhodan for 18 in an otherwise disappointing batting display by the city side. Looknauth claimed 4-34 and Shepherd 3-56.
At Port Mourant, Upper Corentyne batted first and declared on 213-9 with Rajiv Ivan scoring 93 and Dellon Anderson 33; Kevin Gordon claimed 3-40 and Anthony Adams 3-46. In reply Essequibo were 90-4 at stumps with Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 21 and Ricardo Adams on one. Keemo Paul made 29. However, it was understood that the coach, manager and other members of the Essequibo team were left stranded for over two hours after the game at Port Mourant as they awaited their transportation to return to the hostel at LBI.
