“Bridges’ to conduct orthopedic surgeries in Linden today
More than a dozen persons were yesterday screened for possible orthopedic surgery at the Linden Hospital Complex yesterday, thanks to the intervention of the “Bridges” Medical mission. The visiting mission is working in

collaboration with the orthopedic department of the Hospital.
The medical mission was reportedly coordinated by the Guyana Medical Relief Council.
Bridges, out of California USA, is headed by Guyanese born Doctor of orthopedics Omar Bayne.
Bayne said it is the team’s “hope to come as often as possible and donate equipment” to completely modernize the orthopedic department at the Local Hospital.
This, he posited, will help to eliminate unnecessary travel to Georgetown by Lindeners to access orthopedic services.
Other members of the team include Dr. Joseph Bayne, Internal Medicine and Cardiology; Dr. David Bayne, Urology; Dr. Shani Isaacs, Psychology; Dr. Kathy Flower, Pediatrics; and Tracy Bayne, Pharmaceuticals.
Bridges is working along with local counterparts Dr. Terence Joseph and Cuban Dr. Jesus Mesa Hechavarria, to treat patients of the orthopedic clinic.
Yesterday a selected list of 18 special cases was screened. However other persons with orthopedic issues turned up to access the services being offered and were also screened.
Those screened will make up the list of patients for possible surgery today.
Patients would also be provided with free after surgery medications, Bayne said.
According to Bayne the team is conducting general orthopedic and specialty treatment. He added “Patients were happy to meet with us and have us help them as much as we can.”
Dr. Jesus Mesa Hechavarria in an invited comment said that the collaboration is welcomed and the exchange of experience is a positive thing.
Speaking about some of the problems faced by the patients Hechavarria said, “Some patients have injuries for years and are now receiving surgeries.” He added that most of the cases in Linden are due to trauma from accidents, falls and other incidents.
