Dear Editor,
President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) K. Juman Yassin in his most recent response to articles written by me attempting to examine his protracted possession of the reins of power continues to digress from the core of our ongoing discussion.
Instead of addressing his failure after so many years at the top, Yassin prefers to highlight trivial issues such as whether or not he knows the letter writer T. Pemberton, me being a de facto campaign manager to one of my nominees for the Presidency (of which there is no iota of truth) and whether I have any example of the GOA Constitution being breached at any time.
The above queries to start with, were not the basis of my inspection of Yassin’s administrative performance, but rather the recurring poor results by our athletes and his inability to influence six previous Heads of State and many Finance / Sport Ministers about the need to invest heavily in Sport, since positive spin offs could be derived by such investment.
As I write, the GOA Head has made no attempt to address in his replies, his poor performance to date, perhaps outlining some of the extenuating factors that are responsible for our enduring abysmal showing at major competitions, but grabs the opportunity to deviate from the real dialogue.
It would appear that the seemingly impregnable foundation of the GOA has been rattled by the scrutiny and there is a scurry by the Establishment to ensure that no further damage is done, before its December elections. He reminds me of the girl from Malawi who so accustomed to running on tracks without lanes, unfortunately stepped out of hers at the Rio Paralympics and was disqualified.
Unaccustomed to the negative assessment, Yassin seems to be suffering from a similar experience, constantly running out of his lane in his responses to my queries.
As he had said, I’m a writer who has to find something to write about for fear of losing my job; well because I don’t want to end up like a mendicant I have to continue to make a contribution to my place of work, providing it is within the confines of good journalism.
