Dear Editor,
On August 11th, I bought a ticket from Travelspan for a return flight from Miami to Georgetown.
I traveled to Georgetown on August 26th. My return to Miami was scheduled for September 24 connecting on to Chicago.
A few days after I arrived in Guyana I received an email from Travelspan saying that Eastern Airlines will not be travelling back to Miami. I was shocked so I went into their office on Regent Street to understand what was going on. The person there, with a bright smile, told me that the airlines only does the Miami route at peak times and now my options are to purchase a one way ticket with another airlines or they could simply refund me about 45% of what I paid for the return trip. At that point I lost it. Here’s the thing.
At the time of purchase didn’t Travelspan know that Eastern airlines only travels in the peak season? I am sure they did.
They took my money then, a few days later, tells me that they are not flying back, leaving me hanging. The other issue is that now I have to get a one way fare which is typically more expensive. On top of that they only did half of the job but refunds me less than half.
So it’s a lose lose situation for me and probably other passengers too. Now, does the authorities in Guyana care about this? Why are all these fly by night airlines continuously allowed to treat Guyanese travelers with such disrespect.
I travel all over the world on business and only the airlines traveling to Guyana make you weigh your carry on.
I made three connections coming to Guyana and it was only the Guyana leg made me pay overweight because I was 3 lbs over.
I know that bringing passengers to and from Guyana is very lucrative for all these airlines, Caribbean Airlines, Copa Airlines, Dynamic and Suriname airlines included.
So I feel that it’s only fair that the Guyana government require that these airlines deposit hefty performance bonds to protect the travelers in these situations.
I appeal to the authorities don’t condone this ridiculous service.
