Chanderpaul Hemraj and Kamesh Yadram struck half centuries as East Coast Demerara (ECD) reached 294-6 against West Berbice when play was halted on day one of the fourth round Guyana Cricket Board Jaguars three-day
league which commenced yesterday.
Hemraj and Yadram batted with authority as they frustrated their opponents with an 83-run third-wicket stand following the demise of Gavin Boodwah and Bhaskar Yadram after ECD were inserted at Enterprise. The start of play was delayed due to a wet area on the bowlers run-up, and when the contest finally got underway at 10:45hrs Boodwah and Bhaskar Yadram added 30 for the opening stand before Boodwah missed a straight ball from off-spinner Collis Butts and was bowled for 13. Yadram timed the ball well and pulled pacer Keyron Fraser for a four and a six, but after looking set for a half century, he attempted an ill-advised single and was run out for 48.
Hemraj was then joined by Kamesh Yadram and the duo batted sensibly as they laid the foundation for a huge ECD total. Hemraj was quick to take advantage of anything wayward; he took boundaries off Fraser before smashing leg spinner Kevin Jawahir over the ropes, while Yadram was content to rotate the strike.
Fraser was impressive in his second spell, but although he failed to provide his team with the breakthrough he caused some hiccups for Yadram with some decent pace on a flat pitch. Yadram however grew in confidence as he continued to accumulate runs on both sides of the pitch. Hemraj maintained his tempo after reaching his fifty and smashed Butts for a four and six, but the off-spinner had him caught for 81 the very next delivery as he attempted another big shot. Hemraj faced 97 balls and batted for 199 minutes hitting nine fours and four sixes.
Just after reaching his half century, Yadram played across to Butts and was bowled for 53 after hitting four fours and one six. Ramnarine Chatura looked solid before he pulled Butts into the hands of short mid-wicket when on 34, leaving the score on 252-5. Butts, the only successful bowler for the day then sent back Vishwanauth Ramlakhan for 15 before Amir Khan and Vivian Albert batted to the close. Khan is on 39 and Albert on three. Butts has 5-75.
Play is set to start at 09:00hrs today.
